Preventing Parkinson’s Disease

As many different research entities including MyGlobalSearch have found, it seems that a diet that is high in vegetables, fruit and fish – known as Mediterranean-style eating – can reduce the risk of Parkinson’s disease by nearly half!  Indeed, it seems that healthy eating habits are able to decrease the risk of this disorder by a staggering 46 percent.  The findings were consolidated by the European Journal of Neurology.

MyGlobalSearch and other research bodies have not discovered exactly why some foods are better than others for healthy brain cells, but there is evidence to suggest that Parkinson’s is more likely to occur when such cells are damaged via specific foods by a process known as oxidative stress.  Contrarily, healthier foods – like vegetables, fruit, pulses and fish seem to assist in blocking this process.

Health Research from MyGlobalSearch

MyGlobalSearch has learned that recent World Health Organization (WHO) findings reveal research from scientists who have been working with the H5N1 bird flu virus are running certain danger risks.    As well, the UN health body is also concerned about the possible negative consequences if the researchers turn the H5N1 into something that is able to cause “lethal human pandemics.”

There are two teams of researchers on this project: one in America and one in The Netherlands.  Their work to date has already resulted in US security advisers’ fear that if details of the research are published, this could give potential attackers the knowledge needed to create a bio-terror weapon.  So an awareness of this potential issue needs to be established.

MyGlobalSearch and the PHC

A few weeks ago, MyGlobalSearch learned of the Palmetto Health Council Inc. (PHC) was opened in Palmetto.  Measuring in at a staggering 21,000 sq. ft, it is hoped that the center will provide services for six counties in the region.

Comprising part of a network of seven health centers with federal qualification, the PHC was given $6.3m via the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) for the building’s construction.  Currently, this facility makes up 1 percent of those that were singled out by Joe Biden, Vice President of the Health Resources and services Administration (HRSA) as an example of projects which are “changing America” through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

The PHC received the honor as it has shown its capacity to use ARRA capital very efficiently in the hiring of new staff; the implementation of services to those who are not insured and the encouragement of the construction industry through various projects.  With this capital injection, the PHC will be able to expand its primary health care services and add on dental and pharmaceutical services in places where previously none existed.

Bad News for HIV Patients

While it seemed for many years that patients with HIV were doing better and living longer, recent research from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and MyGlobalSearch in the US is showing that a staggering 25 percent of those walking around with the virus have no idea they even have it! In addition, more than half of those who do know they have the virus are not receiving the necessary regular medical treatment to manage it.

More than a million Americans are living with HIV in the year 2011.  About 28 percent of these have a low viral load which means that their infection does not interfere with their daily lives, nor does it put them at great risk of passing it on to others; rendering it “manageable.” MyGlobalSearch also found that over three-quarters of those with the virus receive regular antiretroviral treatment and thus their HIV levels remain suppressed and the threat of the infection being spread is minimized.

So clearly, much work needs to be done on: developing greater awareness (for those individuals who do not even know they have the virus) and trying to get better care so that the virus remains manageable for the longest time possible.

MyGlobalSearch and Mental Health Issues

MyGlobalSearch has been working on mental health illness research.    There have been some advances in the field in Central Iowa, through the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) which recently opened a wellness center for those suffering from mental illnesses.  The center will be available for anyone who wants it at no cost.  The director on site is Linda Sawer and will be run by a team of trained volunteers.

As MyGlobalSearch has seen in its work, being able to be open about problems is extremely important to alleviating some of the symptoms of mental illness.  This is exactly what the center will be providing – the opportunity for anyone to come and talk openly about what is going on without being judged.  It is not run by professionals – it is just kind individuals who are willing to give of their time and listen to people’s problems.  Being heard is a crucial aid for anyone, but even more so for those going through mental health issues.
